What did I like about this project?

We had to make advertisements and learning the causes of the natural disasters. I also enjoyed conducting the experiments.

What didn’t you like about this project?

I didn’t get the point of putting our conclusion on edublogs.

Suggest 3 ideas that could improve engage this project?

More use of the different IT skills

Effective journals

More practicals

Did you like the driving question?

Yes because it really made us think about this project.

Conclusion for colliding plates

Filed under: Science — alee10 at 5:42 pm on Tuesday, September 16, 2008

The paper represents the plates in the crust. These plates always colliding with another or other plates. If plates collide towards each other, there is an enormous amount of pressure which cause the plates to push upwards. This is how mountains and volcanoes are formed. They can also overlap and change the landform.

Conclusion for plates that seperate

Filed under: Science — alee10 at 5:38 pm on Tuesday, September 16, 2008

In this experiment, the strip of paper represents the plates and the convection (us pulling the paper) pushes the plates up, causing new landform or change in landform.

Conclusion for convection currents

Convectio nis caused by energy, in this case it was heat. Maybe convection in the earth may cause these natural disasters such as volcano eruptions and earthquakes.

Conclusion:

Plates collide just like the ones we did in our experiment. In our experiment, he have pushed a stack of paper into each other in different ways. The paper represents the plates and since the paper is colliding into each other, the paper changes.

1. Likes and dislikes of this project…..any suggestions on how to improve???

I think this project waas great. I like the fact that we got to design and make our prototype. Things i disliked were that we had to do the research, it was a bit difficult to find the ingformation

2. What areas do you think you have improved in from project 1 to project 4?

Motivation and organisation.

3. What further skills would you like to develop over the next few projects?

Organisation, research skills and motivation.

  • How do you feel the media portrays social justice issues?
  • I feel that the social justice issues are presented ethically or unethically depending on the article but the media usually goes against the article.

Has it been difficult to find articles on social justice issues why/why not?

Yes it has been easy as our topic is global warming and it affects all around the world. There are articles about different countries associating with global warming.

    1. Analyse why red sunsets can sometimes be more impressive when there is more dust or pollution in the air than usual.

The red sunset are created from a process called scattering in which the molecules of gas and dust particles, in the atmosphere alter the direction of light ray. At sunrise or sunset, the light has to travel further since the blue rays have scattered more, only red and orange are shown.

    1. Describe what happens inside water droplets to cause a rainbow and explain how you can tell whether a rainbow is a primary or secondary.

The rain droplets act as prisms in the sky. Sometimes the colours will reach our eyes after refracting and undergoing total internal reflection. As the light gets in the droplet, it reflects the colours of the spectrum back out. The rainbow which has from violet down the bottom to the red, it is a primary rainbow and if the red is down the bottom while the violet is up the top, it is a secondary rainbow.

Investigate the two types of sight defect- long-sightedness and short sightedness.

    Find the following information:

    1. what causes the defect

Long-sightedness or hyperopia is a defect of vision because the eye is too short or when the lens cannot become round enough. The cause of the defect are not well understood.

    1. the symptoms displayed

The symptoms can include of affecting the ability to focus, headaches and tiredness. Long-sightedness is where you have problems seeing things close up.

    1. propose what sort of lens may be used to correct each vision.

Convex lens should do the trick.

    a. what causes the defect

Short-sided or myopia is adefect of vision because the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too steep.

    a. the symptoms displayed

If you are short-sighted, you may have trouble seeing things far away from you.

     a. propose what sort of lens may be used to correct each vision

Concave lenses should do the trick.
